Bamyan is one of the central provinces of Afghanistan that locates to the south of Hindu Kosh and north of Baba Mountains. The province has 18,029 square kilometers area and its population reaches up to 700,000.
Bamyan has seven districts and it occupies strategic location where the historical Silk Road passes through. The ruins of Buddhist idol, Band-e Amir, cities of Ghulghula and Dahak, Azdar valley and Shahr-e Shahi are the historical antiquities of the province.
Weaving carpets, blankets and clothes are the major handicrafts of Bamyan province. Hazaragi carpets are the most popular products of this province throughout the world and tourists from abroad are buying different kinds of handmade products on regular basis.
In 2010, the Afghanistan Rural Enterprise Development Program (AREDP) started to work in Bamyan covering 137 villages in Yakawlang, Bamyan Center, Saighan, Panjab and Waras districts. Thus far, AREDP has established 1,033 Saving Groups (SGs), 254 Enterprise Groups (EGs), 62 Village Saving and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and has supported 45 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the province.
As a result of these interventions, community members in Bamyan have successfully mobilized 34.9 million Afs from their own savings and have disbursed 29.3 million Afs for rural enterprise development and business purposes resulting in creation of 12,538 sustainable jobs for rural men and women. AREDP believes that Afghan women play a vital role in economic growth, thus, the program has provided the opportunity for female entrepreneurs to actively engage in economic activities and income generation. Today, out of 1,033 saving groups, 514 SGs are formed by women and as well as 139 EGs are established and managed by female entrepreneurs.
